Superintendents’ Red Ribbon Leadership Program

Each fall, Red Ribbon Week is celebrated across America to promote the importance of a healthy, drug-free lifestyle among our youth. Each year, outstanding students from Mobile and Baldwin County are selected as individuals who exemplify the 6 pillars of Character promoted by the Character Counts initiative and the Drug Education Council. These include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

These young student leaders work with their School Red Ribbon Coordinator to lead Red Ribbon activities on their school campus during Red Ribbon Week.  These students are also challenged to plan and execute a community service project to help their peers build a connection to the community and encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

The 2025 National Red Ribbon Week is October 23rd – 31st. However, we encourage each school to celebrate Red Ribbon during a week in October or November that is most suitable for them.

We encourage each school to choose a Red Ribbon leader. These student leaders are honored at our Superintendents’ Red Ribbon Leadership Kickoff events held in Mobile County and Baldwin County each September.

At the Kickoff Events, students, parents, and educators learn about the history of Red Ribbon Week and why it is such an important prevention program, and also receive instructions for the community service projects each student will be asked to complete.  Then in the spring, each student leader who submits their project information to us will be presented with a commemorative medallion at a Red Ribbon Celebration. In addition, Courtney Upton Leadership Scholarships are awarded to outstanding 12th-grade projects in Mobile and Baldwin Counties.
